WHAT IS NEOCLASSICISM ART?

Is an artistic style which developed in Europe between 1760 and 1830.

The best-known Neoclassical artists were French

Neoclassicism was the result of a rejection of Rococo´s excesses and the discovery of the Roman ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii in Italy

Neoclassicism imitated classical Greek and Roman art and was characterised by its simplicity

ARCHITECTURE

- Buildings were well-proporcionated 
- Imitated classical temples 
- Triumphal arches, with columns and domes.

PAINTING

Because of the lack of Greek and Roman models, painters imitated classical relifs. 

This meant that figures often looked like statues and tones of grey were frequently used.

- Mythological and historical themes were common

- Many idealised portraits were also produced.
